FAQ

About Kango

Kango is an app-based service that enables you to schedule rides for kids, from preschool to high school. Whether your child needs a ride to school every Monday or needs to get to soccer practice everyday after school, you can trust Kango to help get your kids where they need to go.

All pre-screened Kango drivers have experience caring for kids and must pass our rigorous selection process, which includes in-person interviews, background checks, fingerprinting, and more. When you sign up, you gain access to this group of providers and can request their help whenever you need it. The Kango service is fully insured and licensed by the Public Utilities Commission.

Our services are currently available in California, Arizona, and New Mexico, with plans to expand to more locations in the near future.

Booking Drivers

How do I book a driver or sitter?
  1. Open the app and go to the Kango home screen
Tap the icon that corresponds to what you need:
    Drivers for rides
    Sitters for childcare
  2. Fill out the Quick Request Form
Select one more more children, add location details and any special needs
  3. Post your Request
Your request will go out to the pre-screened Drivers and Sitters in your area. If you have expressed a preference for one or more specific drivers or sitters, your request will be posted to them, first. If a driver or sitter is available and accepts your request, you will receive a notification in the app. You will then be able to message them directly via the app, if desired.
Can I schedule an interview with a driver or sitter before I book?
Yes! On request, you can meet your driver or sitter ahead of time so that both you and your child feel comfortable. You can even go for a ride-along with a driver.

Your first interview is free. Booking rates apply to subsequent interviews.
What if my child requires a car seat or booster seat?
No problem! Just specify whether you need Kango to supply a forward-facing car seat or booster seat when you set up your child's profile and that information will automatically be included with your request. We will arrange for your driver to have the seat safely installed in the car before pickup.
What if I need a driver to babysit my child before drop off or after pickup?
Our drivers can also babysit. Please indicate your needs when you submit your request so we know how many additional hours of babysitting are required - or post two separate requests and we will process them together.

Ride fares will apply for the ride itself and Sitter rates will apply for babysitting hours.
Are Kango drivers available for car pools, where children from several families can share the ride?
Yes! Please indicate the details of what you need when you submit your request, and we can contact you individually if we need additional information.
Can I request a specific driver or sitter?
Yes! How to request a specific driver or sitter: Simply specify your requested driver or sitter’s name in the Notes section of your request.

Some reasons you might want to request a specific driver or sitter:

  • You used this driver or sitter before and your kids loved them!
  • You viewed their profile and think they’d be a great fit for your family
How do I stay in touch with a driver or sitter while they are taking care of my child?
Your driver or sitter will comment or message you via the app so you are always in the loop. Please keep in mind they cannot text while driving! You can also use the app to track location in real time or call your provider if you need to talk.
Can Kango drive adults?
Parents and caregivers can ride along with their children, as long as they are listed as passengers on the ride in the Kango app, and vehicle capacity permitting. However, rides for unaccompanied adults/seniors with specific medical conditions or disabilities, require approval by Kango in advance of the ride. Before the ride, requestors must first contact Kango to discuss the passenger's special needs, determine if we have a driver with the required experience and training, and confirm the booking. It is also necessary to list any special needs or requirements in the Notes section of the ride request in the app, in addition to the passenger profile.
Can I set up recurring rides and childcare with drivers or sitters?
Yes! Please indicate the details of what you need when you submit your request and we will contact you individually if there are any questions. While we do our best to find drivers and/or sitters who can help you as many times as possible, we cannot guarantee that it will always be the same person.
Can I save a location to reuse on future requests?
Yes! If you add an address for a new location when creating a request, it will automatically be added to your list of previously used locations. Each time you make a request, you can select that location again.
How do I pay a driver or sitter?

    • Southern California : $24
    • Central California : $20

    • For babysitting, there is a minimum duration of one hour.
Will any tax or regulatory fees be added to my ride fares?
In California, as required by law, the following regulatory fees are added to applicable ride fares in your area at the time of payment. These charges, if applied, appear on your payment confirmation (receipt) email for each ride. Kango must pay (remit) these fees to the relevant authorities :

  • $0.10 CA Access for All Fee: Pursuant to Public Utilities Commission Decision D.19-06-033, Kango, along with other ridesharing or “Transportation Network Companies” (TNC), is required to collect and remit to the California Public Utilities Commission, a ten cent ($0.10) fee on each ride in California, to support the expansion of on-demand transportation for non-folding wheelchair users who require a wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV).
    • Additional information: In 2018, the California Legislature adopted Senate Bill 1376, known as the, “TNC Access for All Act.” According to this Act, each Transportation Network Company providing services in California must collect and remit to the California Public Utilities Commission (“CPUC”) an Access for All Fee in the amount of $0.10 per ride. July 1, 2019 was the scheduled start date for the fee. Funds collected by the CPUC in accordance with this Act are deposited into an Access for All Fund and then distributed on a competitive basis to transportation carriers that establish on-demand transportation programs or partnerships to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities.
  • San Francisco Traffic Mitigation Congestion Tax: In November 2019, the voters of San Francisco passed Proposition D, the Traffic Congestion Mitigation Tax. In general, the measure places a 3.25% charge on individual rideshare rides provided by TNC companies, among other types of services. Tax rates may vary by type of booking. Only rides that originate in the city of San Francisco are subject to the tax.
Why is there a safe ride fee for Kango?
The safe ride fee helps us to ensure that the most reliable, safest drivers and sitters are available to you. Our rigorous screening, compliance, and operations support are ongoing activities at Kango that go well beyond the initial vetting of candidates:
  • Periodic background checks
  • TrustLine verification (includes fingerprinting)
  • DMV record checks
  • Vehicle safety inspections
  • Driver and sitter training
  • Car seat and booster seat availability
  • Commercial insurance coverage
  • Operating permit issued by the Public Utilities Commission
What is your cancellation policy if I need to cancel a ride or sitter request?
If you cancel a confirmed ride or childcare request more than 24 hours before the date and time that it is scheduled to start, there is no cancellation fee. Similarly, if you cancel a request that was never confirmed (e.g. never assigned to a driver or sitter), no fee will apply.

If you cancel a confirmed request less than 24 hours before it’s scheduled to begin, a cancellation fee will apply to cover the cost of your driver or sitter’s time:
  • For ride requests, we will charge you the estimated cost of the ride (low end of the estimated range)
  • For childcare requests, we will charge you 50% of the estimated cost. However, if you cancel less than 1 hour before the sitter is supposed to arrive at your door, then we will charge you the full estimate.
We understand that last minute changes do arise, especially when managing kids’ schedules. In that spirit, we will waive the fee for first-time cancellations. If you cancel more than once, then fees will apply.

What is Kango doing to avoid the spread of COVID-19?
Keeping both our drivers and our passengers safe is our highest priority.

To that end, we have formalized our wellness policy for families and providers, and implemented new health and safety protocols.

Wellness Policy

We are enforcing the wellness guidelines below as per guidance issued by the CDC:

Wellness Policy for Families:

If your child is sick, please keep them home: Please do not request a ride for your child, and/or please cancel your confirmed ride if your child has cold/flu symptoms, a fever, a cough, or shortness of breath. For more information about COVID-19 symptoms, you can read the CDC information here. If symptoms get worse, call your pediatrician or healthcare provider.

You will be required to certify that you are following this policy, in advance of each confirmed Kango ride.

Wellness Policy for Drivers and Care Providers:

If you are sick, please stay home: Please do not drive if you have cold/flu symptoms, a fever, a cough, or shortness of breath. For more information about COVID-19 symptoms, you can read the CDC information here. If your symptoms get worse, call your doctor. It is not a new policy at Kango that drivers should not drive passengers if they are sick, but it is even more critical now, during this outbreak.

You will be required to certify that you are following this policy, in advance of each assigned Kango ride.

Updated COVID 19 Health and Safety Protocols

We are putting in place a set of protocols and app updates that we believe are best-in-class for safe youth transportation. We developed these protocols in collaboration with a panel of physicians, pediatricians, and public health and infectious disease experts. From institutions ranging from Harvard University Medical School to the Center for Global Health Science and Security at Georgetown University, these doctors have reviewed and provided feedback on our detailed procedures. Because this situation is rapidly changing, this group of medical experts will continue to guide our policies based on scientific data and public health information.

As safety remains our top priority, we are requesting that you please follow the guidelines below for every Kango ride. These simple but important steps based on CDC and Department of Public Health guidelines will help to keep children and drivers safe. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to us. We’d be happy to talk through it with you.

  1. If your child is showing any signs of illness or cold/flu symptoms, a fever, a cough, or shortness of breath, or has known exposure to COVID-19, please cancel your child’s ride as soon as possible
  2. Per CDC mask guidelines, children age 2 and up are required to wear a mask or face covering (a bandana or scarf is ok) from the time he or she approaches the Kango vehicle, until they exit the vehicle safely and are in the care of a responsible adult, and instructed to remove the covering if appropriate. If your child needs a medical exception to this requirement, please contact Kango support to let us know as soon as possible, and at least 24 hours in advance of their first ride
  3. Vehicle occupancy may be reduced, or restricted to passengers who are in the same household, or who are in the same “cohort” group at school together
  4. If a child requires a carseat, we ask that an authorized parent, guardian or caregiver wearing a mask please put the child into the seat and buckle them safely; and if possible, that the receiving responsible adult removes the child from the car seat upon arrival at destination
We are providing Kango drivers with PPE supplies.

Our drivers will be doing their part as well :
  1. Confirming to Kango before driving that to the best of their knowledge they are in good health, do not have symptoms of illness and do not have known exposure to COVID-19
  2. Wearing masks and washing or cleaning their hands with sanitizer frequently
  3. Cleaning their vehicles before and after the ride, with concentrated focus on high-touch areas like seat belts, door handles, and interior door areas
  4. Setting the air ventilation/air conditioning to outside air ventilation/non-recirculation mode
  5. Minimizing driver - rider contact, within safety guidelines
What about COVID-19 testing?
If we are informed that a passenger or driver has tested positive for COVID-19 illness, they will be temporarily suspended from using Kango until they have been medically cleared. We will also follow guidelines from local health authorities and the CDC to identify other persons who may have been affected.

To be excluded from the Nearby friends list in Suggested Friends, go to Me >Settings (top left ‘gear’ icon) >Preferences and Privacy. Set ‘Show profile in Nearby friends’ to OFF. To be excluded from ‘Find and Invite’ search results, set ‘Show profile in Search results’ to OFF.
NOTE: Only friends who are connected to you in Kango, can see the ‘Children’ information section of your profile. ANDROID Kango users: navigation to Settings may vary by handset type
